Now loved by many coffee enthusiasts, Maruyama Coffee's history is built on an unending quest for quality and deep respect for coffee.
The Age of In-House Roasting
Maruyama Coffee originated by utilizing the "Hiiragi" café in Karuizawa.
1991
April: Maruyama Coffee was founded and commenced
operations at "Hiiragi."
1993
March: Ceased operations at "Hiiragi."
Transitioned to a non-storefront model, roasting from home and exclusively conducting sales via delivery and mail-order.
1994
Creation of the Official Logo
1995
Built a roasting hut on the grounds of the Karuizawa Main Store and
relocated so that roasting took place here.
1998
Started operations at the current
Karuizawa Main Store.
The Era of Pivotal Change
Started direct imports of specialty coffee and evolved into a specialty coffee roaster.
2000
Introduced a service using a French press.
2001
Made our inaugural participation in the Cup of Excellence (COE) international auction and started purchasing direct from the origin.
2002
Acquired Agua Limpa for an unprecedented price
at the Brazil COE.
The Dawn of the Specialty Coffee Era
The current foundations of Maruyama Coffee were established during this period.
2004
Incorporated the Probat L12, a state-of-the-art roaster from Germany.
2005
Became a limited liability company.
Maruyama Coffee opened its second store; Risonare Yatsugatake.
2008
Maruyama Coffee launched its third store; the Komoro store.
Launched the Komoro factory to enhance production capabilities.
Relocated the order center, roasting facilities,
and office functions from Karuizawa to Komoro.
Incorporated a 35kg smart roaster at the Komoro factory.
Ceased roasting operations at the Karuizawa Main Store.
Operations ceased in Karuizawa after the initiation of the Komoro factory.
Head roaster transitioned from Mr. Maruyama to the next generation.
2009
Opened the Harunire Terrace store.
Initiated a partnership with Agro Takeshi Farm
in Bolivia.
Won the Japan Barista Championship (JBC) for the first time.
Successfully purchased Guatemala COE #1; El Inferto for an unprecedented price.
2011
Renewed the official logo.
The Era of Brand Reinforcement
The Maruyama Coffee brand has been successfully established primarily in Tokyo.
2012
Launched our inaugural Tokyo store; the Oyamadai store,
in Setagaya, Tokyo.
2013
Introduced a smart roaster (70kg drum) and operated two roasting machines.
Achieved five consecutive victories at the Japan Barista Championship (JBC) starting from 2009.
Won at the Japan Siphon Championships for the first time.
Launched the Nishiazabu store in December, a 45-seat street-facing store in Nishiazabu, Tokyo.
2014
Updated to our current logo and converted from a limited liability
company to a corporation.
Produced the first Asian World Champion at the World Barista Championship (WBC).
Started handling Geisha coffee from the Agro Takeshi Farm in Bolivia.
2017
Launched the Discover Coffee Project.
Created the video "Dear Growers" which focuses on producers. Now available on YouTube.
Produced a champion at the Japan Brewers Cup (JBrC).
2018
Began handling specialty coffee from India.
Began operations at the Karuizawa Center.
Transitioned the production of drip bags and
coffee packs in-house.
Secured 1st place at the Costa Rica Cup of Excellence (COE) and set a historical record with a purchase price of ¥73,000 per kilogram.
2019
Opened the Ecute Edition Shibuya store.
The Era of New Growth
Focusing on new product development to deliver
specialty coffee to more people.
2020
Opened the Isetan Shinjuku Prado Epicerie store.
Won 1st place at the inaugural Ethiopia Cup of Excellence (COE)
2021
Launched the raw coffee bean sales platform KOP (Kentaro's Open Platform).

Alto Cielo launched
